Black River is the capital of St. Elizabeth, a parish located in southwestern Jamaica. It is situated at the mouth of the river of the equivalent name. Previously a lucrative sugar port, it serves at present a focal point of environmental tourism in addition to a gateway to the Treasure Beach resort destination; Treasure Beach and Crane Beach are to the south-east with Luana Beach to the west.
Ever-growing achievements brought about the development of numerous warehouses, which nowadays are used as dining places as well as bases for eco-tours of the river. Black River is undoubtedly one of the longest-existing urban areas in the island, being presented on John Sellers 1685 map .It was created by the Leyden brothers of The United Kingdom, three independently rich men who were substantial land owners in the area.
